What are VG and PG in e-cigarettes?
Jun 17, 2022
Whether you're a seasoned vape user or just made the switch, you may still have to do a lot of experimentation to enhance your vape experience.
All e-liquids contain two main ingredients in varying proportions: VG and PG. Each ingredient can create a unique experience. It comes down to knowing what you want and what proportions will give you.
These ratios—often referred to throughout the industry as VG and PG ratios—affect everything from flavor volume to steam strength.
Read on as we break down the VG and PG ratios for you so you can find the best e-liquid for your complex taste.
What is VG?
VG stands for vegetable glycerin. Also known as glycerin or glycerin, it is a natural chemical derived from vegetable oils. Given that it is so effective as a thickener, VG is included in a variety of unexpected products. Its main purpose in e-liquid is to control the density of the vapor. Since it's much denser than its PG counterpart, higher levels of VG content will give your vapor cloud a thicker feel. Generally, the thicker the steam, the easier it is to inhale.
Some vapers with higher VG rates report dehydration or dry mouth, all you have to do is make sure you drink plenty of water.
VG liquid can also clog the coils of the nebulizer, so you'll want to make sure your vape model can handle higher VG concentrations.
What is PG?
PG (propylene glycol) is found in many of the same household products as vegetable glycerin, including toothpaste, pet food, grooming products, shampoos, and some medications. However, when it comes to e-liquids, PG is quite different.
PG is much less sticky than VG, but it is far more effective at delivering what the vaping industry calls a "sore throat." If you're used to nicotine, you'll think "sore throat" is a very similar feeling.
Aside from the "sore throat" it often produces, PG generally has a better flavor than VG. In terms of flavor concentration alone, e-liquids with higher PG ratios tend to be more common.
Propylene glycol is colorless and odorless, and its main function is to absorb and retain water.
Like e-liquids with high VG content, e-liquids containing PG are also prone to side effects such as dehydration, dry mouth, and sore throat.
