The results suggest that recommending a refillable e-cigarette with an e-liquid with a strength and flavor of the patient’s choice is a more effective approach for dependent smokers than prescribing NRTs. Lead researcher has suggested that e-cigarettes should be recommended to smokers who have previously struggled to quit using other methods, particularly when there is limited behavioral support available.” Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, which funded the study, also said: “This study shows e-cigarettes can be a very effective tool for people who want to stop smoking, including those who’ve tried to quit before. And research so far shows that vaping is far less harmful than smoking. Statistics show that e-cigarettes are the most popular smoking cessation and harm reduction product in the UK. The UK government is pushing for e-cigarettes to be included in health insurance to ensure that smokers of all incomes and walks of life can use the product to quit.
Earlier this March, a tobacco harm reduction expert and chair of the advisory board of the Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics at the University of Ottawa, Canada, noted at the Fourth Asian Harm Reduction Forum that the Canadian government has adopted tobacco harm reduction strategies to facilitate progress in tobacco control in Canada. The expert argued that e-cigarettes could improve the public health environment.
In addition, the Canadian government's official website also cites several authoritative research reports detailing the cessation and harm reduction potential of e-cigarettes, and clearly states that smokers switching to e-cigarettes will reduce exposure to harmful substances and can greatly improve the success rate of smokers in quitting and improve their overall health status.
